To Wrap or Not to Wrap

Good Morning!

I have always dreaded when I have to do wire wrapping. I usually have to attempt the wrap twice at the minimum and I usually am disgusted by the way it looks when it comes out. I know that I need to practice to make it work for me but I am too impatient for that. Last week, I received my Beading Daily newsletter and the title was To Wrap or Not to Wrap; Wire that is... It gave me a great tip that I have been using in my wrapping this week: Don't expect the first one to be perfect. That's exactly my problem because I want them all to be perfect. I hate to waste wire (even if I buy the cheap stuff) so if it isn't perfect, I consider it waste. However, the article goes on to show close-up photos of just how to do it. So while I was practicing this past week, I just printed out the article and had it handy. Then I practiced SEVERAL times and didn't expect much so that when it wasn't just right, I wasn't upset. By the end of the day, I think I figured it out and am pretty confident that I can wrap for just about any project. Cool stuff!

Etsy Selling Tip

Good Morning!

I am terrible at pricing my works so after a little searching, I found a great article on Etsy to provide some tips! The best tip? The simplified formula for finding the price:

Cost (Labor + Materials Cost) x 2 = The Wholesale Price

Wholesale Price x 2 = Retail Price

Very simple! Now one thing that the article does NOT mention is the way to figure the hourly rate to pay. So I did a little searching and there are a few articles out there that giv some tips but no one just comes out and says "My time is worth $x". I did find one that said for beginners, $10 is a reasonable rate. I found another that showed $35 is a great rate for handmade jewels.

So, it comes down to the fact that it is based on YOUR comfort level with what YOUR time is worth. The most important thing is that you are making out of it what you want to make. For me, I find jewelry making to be so relaxing. It isn't my primary source of income and I still consider myself a beginner so $10/hour is reasonable in my mind. As time goes by and I continue to get my name out there and start really selling, I might go up in that amount. I guess time will tell!

Now, here is why I started searching - I have a new item that I am getting ready to place in a few shops; the 3-D Beaded Hummingbird. However, I don't know what to price it. It takes me about 8 hours to create so if I charge $10 per hour for my time, $80 is the starting point. The materials are next to nothing (let's say $3). So that is $83. If I use the above formula, the wholesale price of the thing is $166. The retail price jumps up to $332. While I would LOVE to be able to make that for each one I sell, I just don't see that they would sell for that! So you be the judge. Do you think that in the little mountain towns of Colorado, I could reasonably ask $150? If not, what do you think I should price these little fellas? Your advice is much appreciated!!

Weekly Bible Study: Praise to the King!

Good Morning!

Cross your fingers that I am back; no travels are forecast for the near future for work and I am working on getting back into the swing of things in the studio.

Worthiness of God? I was asked if I have begun to understand the worthiness of God and at first, I cannot grasp the thought. God is not the one that needs to be worthy of my praise, right? Instead it is I that needs to be worthy of receiving his grace. While all of that may be true, it is the concept of worship that I was being asked to consider. My heart, body, mind, and soul are so full of the Holy Spirit that I am over flowing with praise and thanksgiving to God. Everything on Earth belongs to God and THAT is what makes God worthy to receive my praise. My thankfulness for all that he ALLOWS me to have and to be. This is what allows praise to come into existence . The benefit of worship is that God fills me with His glory and will continue to show me His path for my life (Psalms 16:11O). That's an amazing thought and gives me great comfort when life simply is not the way I think it should be going. In fact, THAT is the very reason for worship; that God will dwell within me and give me hope and strength . HE is the one who will save me from my enemies in my battles. WHAT A COMFORT!! Makes me want to jump up and SHOUT in praise!!

Heavenly Father,

It says in Revelation 5:12 YOU alone are worthy of praise. When times are tough, fill me with your Holy Spirit and remind me that with you, I am capable of handling anything this world throws at me. Holy is your name!! AMEN!

Weekly Bible Study: Not What You Expect

Good Morning!!

So many times in my life, I take for granted all of the things I have and begin to expect that my life is going to go in the direction of MY choosing. Then one day, I'm going along and BAM; God hits me up for a different direction. My first reaction is always resistance. "That can't possibly be what you meant God." I assure you friends, God always means what He says to me. There are many times that I EXPECT God to act in a certain way simply because it is what I want or think I deserve. Yet God always seems to have other plans. This is where having some really good friends can come in handy; ones who will tell me when I'm being stupid. The reward for following God and doing His will even if it seems odd is going to be amazing I am sure. It's like when my boss asks me to do something that is not really part of my normal routine. He is only developing me for greatness. God does the same thing! I love the verse in Isaiah that shows that God is not confined to human ideas or opinions. If I keep Him in a box I have designed for Him, He is going to show me He is bigger than the box!!

"Holy Spirit - I ask that you help me to understand and trust that God's plans for me are much better than what I could ever come up with on my own!"

Weekly Bible Study: Embracing Grace & Faith

Good Afternoon!

I'm finally back in the mountains and able to sit in my sun room and spend some time reading and worshiping. Let's see what God has to say to me this week. I pray that in sharing with you, God speaks to you in new ways as well.

In 1 Kings 18:21, the people were given a choice by Elijah; to follow the Lord or Baal. The people said nothing thereby making a choice. Imagine being a part of that crowd and wanting to make a choice but because no one is saying anything, you keep silent. You, with the rest of the crowd would be condemned for all eternity. Makes me a bit nervous actually. But how often do I choose to keep my mouth shut rather than shouting out that I choose to follow the Lord?

Fast forward to that day when I stand before my father in Heaven. Is simply shouting out that I chose to follow God going to be enough? Is knowing the Bible and being able to spit out certain verses when needed enough to be saved? Actually, it is the grace of God (His gift to me through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ) and my faith that is going to save me in the end. My salvation will come through that personal relationship that I constantly am striving to have. Faith is the most difficult for me sometimes. I want so desperately to see proof so that I KNOW. Yet I read in Hebrews the simple statement of what faith is. I pray that God will 'show' me that grace through faith and help me to know and understand Him in a way that I never have before. I DO NOT want to reach my final destination for eternity for God to say that He never knew me. I want to know Him and do His will NOW so that I can run to His open arms and finally FEEL what I have had faith in for so long.

"Thank you God for your gifts of grace, faith, and your son Jesus. Worthy is the Lamb!"

Weekly Bible Study: Extravagant Worship

Good Evening!

I'm once again traveling for work but this time I remembered to put my Bible and my journal in my suitcase!

Almost every day I praise and worship in my car on my way to work. I listen to KLove on my iPhone all day long at work. I listen to my iTunes play list of Christian music in my studio or while I am cleaning at my house. I love to listen to worship music and sing the Lord's praises!! Most of the time though, I am by myself and I share this time privately with the Lord. In fact, many times when I am driving and singing along or praying out lout, I stop when I pass another person. I admit that the reasons are all selfish; fear of what others will think 1) when they see me talking to myself and 2) when they hear it is to God. Totally WRONG!

David reminded me today that God really doesn't care HOW I worship. He just cares that I do. This life is not about what others think of me. This life is about being thankful and giving my praises to God as He works out the plans He has for me. There are so many times during the day that I simply want to fall to my knees and thank God for the so many blessings. I don't though because that sometimes seems so 'taboo'. BUT WHO CARES!?! If I were to lose face because of saying a quick prayer before a meal then so be it! I so need to get better at my worship and not be afraid to 'let loose' when the Holy Spirit moves me. Who knows...that may be just the way God uses me to lead another to worship in the same manner!

"God, please give me the courage to worship you always, no matter who is around and now matter what they think of me. Let me sing your praises at the top of my lungs with my window down in the middle of rush hour because it is pleasing to you, not because it is pleasing to anyone else."

What An Amazing God!!

Good Morning!!

Have you ever had one of those days that you simply have to drop to your knees and thank GOD that you have everything you do?? I am having THAT day and I simply have to share with you my experience!!

Because of where we live in the mountains, I have two options when I go into work; I can go to my office in Denver or I can work in Colorado Springs. If I go to Denver, I listen to KLove and whole-heartedly support their ministry. However, if I go to Colorado Springs, I listen to KBIQ which is a local Christian radio station. This morning, I decided to go to The Springs. I don't usually pick up KBIQ until I get almost to Woodland Park so this morning I was listening to KLove. The topic of discussion was how God has used an event in your life to shape your beliefs and make you who you are today. I was thinking to myself of all of the times that God has intervened to point me in the direction of HIS will. I then started thinking to myself that I needed to pick up a book to send to my adoptee out at the Lutheran Valley Retreat camp. I had decided I was going to stop and pick up The Shack for him because I really believe everyone should read this book.

So when I could no longer listen to KLove, I switched over to KBIQ. They were doing the birthdays when I first flipped over so I thought nothing of it. About 10 miles from my destination (the bank to cash my jewelry check so I can go to Manitou to buy beads this afternoon), they started doing an interview with the author Kristen Jane Anderson (at this point I hadn't caught the name) of Life, In Spite of Me. I started to listen to the author talk about the experiences that had led her on her journey to a personal relationship with God; it is an amazing story. I don't want to spoil it should you choose to read it yourself but to hear her tell it was a big fat slap in the face for me. I got to the bank and was going to run in fast so I could get back into the car to listen to the entire interview. However, the bank was closed when I arrived. So I stayed in the car and drove through the Starbucks drive through so I could stay engaged in the story. When I got back to the bank parking lot, the bank was open but I simply could not tear myself away. I listened intently as the author talked about how one event changed her life forever. When it was over, KBIQ was giving away three copies of the book to callers 7, 8, and 9. I have attempted to get books from this station before but I have always just heard that silly busy signal. Today it began to ring and the answer on the other line was "Good morning KBIQ - you are caller 8." I instantly started crying.

People, God put me there to hear this woman's amazing story and to pick up a copy of this book. Right now I'm not sure if He has meant it for me or for someone else (as mentioned earlier) but I have it in my hands. I started reading it right away and I really think He intends for me to read it first and then share it with others (sorry Indiana).

In fact, I want to share the message to the reader at the very beginning of the book:

"To God. You are the reason that I live. Thank you for everything you are. I will love you forever. To anyone who has ever questioned the point to life or wondered why you're alive, and those who want to help the hurting. This book is for you."

In my selfishness, I oftentimes forget that others are hurting just as much as I am. There are others who I can help by sharing the good news that God has a plan for us. I have to trust in Him that he will provide exactly what I need to be His hands and feet. I hope my blog is step one...

Weekly Bible Study: Broken Relationships

Good Morning!

1 Samuel 15 has to be one of the saddest books in the Bible. However, the lesson taught to me today from those pages is quite profound. God commands His newly appointed King of Israel, Saul to carry out quite an order; to destroy EVERYTHING in a neighboring city. However, Saul and his men decide that they should go ahead and save the best of everything for themselves. Of course God calls Saul out on this through His servant Samuel. Once busted, Saul continues to tell Samuel that his intentions were good; to serve and worship [Samuel's] 'your' God with the plunder. Yeah - this was still in direct disobedience to God's orders so Saul is pretty much removed from ANY relationship with God.

I could not even fathom not being forgiven by God for some of the stupid things I do. I do have to come clean though and let you know that (just like Saul and his men) I occasionally save the best for myself. It is truly a selfish sin; especially since everything I have belongs to God and I simply manage it during my time here on Earth. Another thing that I cannot comprehend is the fact that Saul continues to reference 'your' God, as if he was too good to have the same God as Samuel. To show your beliefs can sometimes be challenging and many are persecuted for doing just that. However, I believe what I believe and am proud to declare so. There are definitely times that are more difficult and those are the times that I lean on God and ask for the right words and His protection. If I don't then I am no better than Saul and would deserve the same punishment.

The good news, though, is that with TRUE repentance, I am forgiven when I am stupid. This means more than simply saying 'I'm sorry'. True repentance is a HEARTFELT recognition of guilt followed by a burning desire to be turned away from sin and do all that is right. There are many times that my life is a broken mess and i reach a level of despair thinking that not even God would want me. HOWEVER, God will not turn away. I just need to remember to take my broken pieces to Jesus and ask for His help to repair. HE is the one and only true healer and fixer of broken relationships; even those with HIM. Such great news!!

Weekly Bible Study: Uncharted Waters

Good Morning!

I haven't been home to put together the weekly Bible Study for my blog so I'm back with one that should make up for it!

In Joshua 3, God leads his people right to the edges of a much flooded Jordan river. After a short chat with Joshua telling him what to do, God follows through with his plan to get His people safely across. I can't help but to think of just how scary that must have been! To trust that you are going to be able to safely cross a flooded river...

Then I begin to wonder, has God ever led me into such a situation? I have to admit that I think he does it on a daily basis. How can I possibly know when God is leading me to an area that looks scary buts ends up being a part of His plan for me? I know Christ and that is all it takes folks!! So how can I possibly know that I am going to be alright when God leads me down a path of uncertainty? Again, I point to Jesus Christ and the knowledge that He will not lead me astray because of His plan. He has one for me and I have to trust in it no matter what. The key here is that I have to be sure that I am asking that God's will be done and then trust that it will be. The blessings that I can receive when I follow and trust in the Lord are countless. The most important is that I am a part of the body of Christ; a sister in the holy family.

There are just three sources to know God's will; the Bible, the Holy Spirit, and the 'mind of Christ'. I try every day to allow the Spirit to fill me and to lead me in the ways that God would want me to go. Is it tough? YOU BET!! Sometimes the way of the Devil seems like a much easier road to follow. However, I simply have to trust that God will lead me down the correct path; the one that fulfills His will.

The best example (I think) in the Bible of what happens when you do NOT follow the will of God is in 1 Chronicles. David is moving the ark. He confers with all of the people around him but yet forgets to consult with God. He ends up putting the ark on a cart rather than transporting the thing in the proper manner. While walking, one of his men trips and falls into the ark. If you have ever seen the Indian Jones movies, you know that touching the ark is most definitely a bad thing! This guy is struck down dead on the spot! While that pretty much sucks for him (being killed by the wrath of God means you won't be spending eternity in Heaven I'm sure), it taught David a valuable lesson; consult with God in ALL that you do and He will lead you down the correct path! Like I said, following and trusting in God is definitely the way to go!

The Bible tells us that in doing God's will we will receive the promise of eternal live. How AWESOME is that going to be?? God has sent His Holy Spirit my way but I have to get my feet wet in order to see what He has in mind. That sounds like a great plan - I'm going to go get my water socks...

Recently, my mother and aunt have started 'playing' around with clay metal. I haven't had the opportunity myself but the pieces they have created have been quite intriguing. However, nothing can compare to the 'baubles' that are created by Carmen. She love to be in her studio making things (and I love the fact that her husband (as does mine) knows how important that is to her). She also loves animals of all kinds and believe that humans have a responsibility to love and protect them and I would totally agree. She donates a portion of all of her sales to the Best Friends Sanctuary and I totally love that about her!

Good Evening!

Well here I sit in the Denver airport waiting on a delayed plane - nothing new. Since I seem to have been granted some free time for once, I figured I would get on and introduce you to an amazing artisan - Tuscan Road Designs aka Holly. Holly has always been creative but really jumped in with both feet into lampwork bead designs after a trip to Murano, Italy. She took the time not long following that trip to also teach her son to bead as well. I think this is fabulous!! In fact, that reminds me of another story that I will have to blog about soon...Anyway - back to Holly. When you visit her Etsy store, you will be greated by some fantastic work!! In fact, she has 14 pages of jewelry that you will simply fall in love with!!

Most recently, her son has been approved in the state of California with a Federal Fish and Wildlife permit so he can rehab little animals. In fact, they just received two baby barn owls. Blog Ring Featured Artist: Snips & Snails

Good Morning!

I am happy to introduce you to a new outstanding artisan from the Handmade Artists' Forum: Robin Hartman; aka owner of Snips & Snails! Robin is the mother of two wonderful toddlers, a part time English professor, and a wife. With all of that going on, she still finds time to dabble in jewelry, bead work, decoupage, crochet, polymer clay, card making, rubber stamping, and plastic shrink. She has been crafting since a very young age (she says it "ever since my tiny little fingers looped balloons around a clothespin and called it a doll"). I also have no doubt that she would venture into any medium and be able to produce very quality work! She loves to travel (although I don't know how she would find the time) and one of her favorite movies is Moulin Rouge (I love her more and more!!).

Weekly Bible Study: Quiet Time With God

Good Morning!

I am traveling this week and I brought my travel Bible rather than my devotional Bible. So instead of skipping, I decided to do a little searching for studies online. Interesting enough, God has directed me to one of those devotionals that I needed this morning! Now I could sit here and write it all out for you and summarize, but I don't wan t to lose any of the meaning that is in the question and answer. There are two things that just reinforced for me the devotional time I spend with God outside in the beauty He has blessed us (my husband and I) with; that it is a relationship and a lifestyle, not just a requirement and that it is a relationship with HIM, not just a request session. Praise Him while speaking TO Him as you would speak to your best friend. Praise Him with singing (which I am constantly doing). The key is that you and your Heavenly Father have a relationship that is 24/7/365. I really like the note card idea mentioned below and might just have to give that a try.

So, on my walk through downtown Dallas this morning, I saw this sign on a pillar in Thanksgiving Square and think it says just what I am trying to convey - spend time in relationship with God no matter what

The question posed is this: "I have trouble doing daily quiet times and praying consistently. I want to though. Can you help?"

The answer provided is this:

I have times when I'm consumed with God and times when God has to reintroduce Himself to me.
Before I share thoughts from my own struggles, let me ask you a question: Why is this important to you?

Are you hungry for God, wanting to love Him and know Him in greater intimacy? Or do you feel like you're letting others down? You know, other people respect your walk with God, and so you may be trying to live up to their expectations, rather than being more concerned with what God thinks. That's pride, and Jesus addresses that kind of heart in Matthew 23:1-6.

I'm guessing your motives are pure, and you're simply wanting to take the next step with God! But I can relate to that other motive ... the prideful one ... and it's ugly. Don't go there. Instead, here are some things that have helped me when I've struggled with spending time with God.

Don't Miss the Obvious!

Time with God is not a five-minute quiet time or even an hour. Time with God is a 24-hour lifestyle! Sure, there may be times in the day when we get away from our routine to pray or read or journal or sing or ... whatever. But we need to worship God all the time, when we're in school, playing basketball, going to the movies, laughing with friends ... you get the idea.

Accountability

Sometimes I'm motivated by accountability. Ask a friend to call you once a week to let you share what you've been reading and learning and what God has impressed on your heart during times of prayer. Ask this friend to pray for you, to be open to what God wants to teach you.

Prayer Partner

Meet with a friend or two and pray for one another, for non-Christians, or whatever else is on your heart. Designate a place and time to meet and give it to God. Not only will you be motivated to grow closer to God, but your friendship with your prayer partner(s) will deepen.

Think About It

Pick one thing from your Bible reading that you can think about all day long. Write down that thought on an index card and stick it in your pocket. When you're walking between classes or have any time to think (30 seconds or so), pull out that card and read it. Let it soak into your brain. By the end of the day, you won't even have to look at the card ... you'll already be thinking about its message!

Mix It Up

Don't get stuck in a rut. There's more than one way to spend time with God. So try something completely different. Draw, journal, sing, take a walk ... whatever. Just do it while focusing on God.

In his excellent book, The Life You've Always Wanted, John Ortberg reminds us that "our primary task is not to calculate how many verses of Scripture we read or how many minutes we spend in prayer. Our task is to use these activities to create opportunities for God to work. Then what happens is up to Him."

God wants to spend time with you and use you to serve Him. Are you ready?

Okay kiddos - here is the artist for YOU!! Kazumi from Japan of K&K Designs! The first time I visited one of her sites, I was have a very hard time reading it; I'm afraid I can't read Japanese. However, you don't need to read Japanese to enjoy her work!! She really loves sock monkeys and you can see it in her monkey-inspired work under the alias Princess Monkey. WOW!! (I love the fact that she givers herself a title of Princess - as all women should!!) I was having a very difficult time selecting just one or two pieces of her work to showcase because she is so diverse. She works in all different sorts of mediums but seems to like chalk the best. She makes custom chalk signs for restaurants, shops, weddings, etc. She can also take her designs and put them on tote-bags, purses, t-shirts, sock monkeys, and amigurumi.

Weekend Feature: Fun and Flirty Pearl Earrings

Good Afternoon!

Once again I will be traveling for the weekend so getting the feature up just a little early this week!

I made these earrings a while ago and quite frankly, forgot I had. When I pulled them out, I noticed that one of the rings was missing so I remade them. The pearls are actually from a pair of earrings I had that didn't hold up at all so I added them to the bottom of this. They are fun and dangly and look great with just about anything. That's why I took them on a blue wine glass - because they will go great with jeans as well. They are certainly a fun summer item!!

Weekly Bible Study: God's Dwelling Place

Good Morning!

Every week for the past few weeks, I have been spending some time sitting in my sunroom reading from my Women of Faith worship Bible that my parents gave me for graduation (Master's Degree) last summer. There are weekly Bible studies throughout this one that ask some really great questions and make me think about where I am and where I am going with my faithfulness and stewardship to the Lord. I have been writing them in a journal that I go back to periodically but I thought it would be better to share with others. Why keep it all to myself, right?? Hopefully you will find something in my mumblings that you can take with you as well!

In Deuteronomy (12:5) God tells us to seek that place that He chooses to bring our offerings; our first fruits (26:2). That place has been missing in my life. After much thought and prayer, I have decided that place is wherever I hear His voice and quite frankly folks, which is EVERYWHERE!! Seriously, God's temple is within ME and that is where He really dwells. Don't believe me? Check in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17. "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple."

So to TRULY dwell with God, you much worship from within your whole spirit as we are told in John 4:24. "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." I can do this in a building with other worshippers or I can do it all alone as I sip my morning coffee. They key is that I do it with my TRUE and WHOLE self. This is made possible because Jesus shed His blood and the curtain hiding God's most holy ark was torn no longer hiding God from our view to instead dwell in our presence. We are now allowed a most intimate relationship with God through his son's death because we are forgiven!!

There are days when I feel so very far away from God and yet He is here with me all the time! I love this visual: Picture Jesus standing between you and God holding that torn curtain in both hands; no longer are you shielded from God's presence. Instead, run into the arms of Jesus and allow Him to surround you alone with the curtain (and his arms) shielding you from the rest of the world. Then you can begin your one-on-one relationship with Him!!

A Different Art Form

Good Evening!

So most of what I post is all about the visual arts. However, the musical arts is one of my favorite pastimes!

For our wedding, my cousin-in-law introduced my husband and I to the Uilleann Pipes. When I first heard them played, I truly thought they were bagpipes (Shhhh - don't tell Dirk). I was very much mistaken! The Uilleann Pipes are instead inflated by bellows strapped around the waist and to the arm. The air produced is passed through a blend of a reed, the chanter, drones, and regulators to produce a very harmonic sound! By themselves or combined with the banjo, whistle, guitar, bodhran, violin, or any other combination, this Irish sound is one that will get your foot tapping! To listen to Dirk play, check out this video in his garage. (You will further be amazed to learn that Dirk has made the pipes he is playing in the video.) If you live in Colorado and are around Erie, CO on Wednesday evenings around 7:00 PM, stop in to hear a live Irish session.

Weekend Feature: Leap Frog

Good Afternoon!

I think I am finally back into the swing of things here. I guess we will see as the week progresses. I must admit I would much prefer not to travel!

This week's feature is my first attempt at a new chainmaille pattern. I saw it in a store, snapped a pic with my iPhone, and then came home to make the attempt (so no pattern, just copy). I named it Leap Frog because for some reason with the green in it and the fact that you jump from ring to ring (like playing leap frog) it made me think of playing leap frog as a kid. The rings are all color-plated and the clasp is a button/snap clasp so it is really easy to get off and on. I bought all of the supplies for this one from a local bead shop that has TONS of colored jump rings. I really need to go back through the pass and run down there to pick up more. As crazy as this sounds, chainmaille is very relaxing and rewarding in my mind!! You can see additional pictures of this one in my Handmade Artists' Shop and on my Etsy store.

I need to get up to the studio this afternoon and work more on a project I started before my last trip.

I'm finally back at home and able to sit down and look at all of the wonderful blogs. This week, I have the pleasure of featuring and fantastic Mosaic Artist: Christine Burgess. When you look at her blog and view her profile, I am sure you will be as shocked as I was when I found out she is a grandmother to seven. Seriously Christine - you look FABULOUS for 21!!

However, I am in LOVE with this Little Angel Lazy Susan!! Weekend Feature: Leap of Faith

One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13 which says:

¹If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. ²If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. ³If I give all I possess to the poor

and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

⁴Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. ⁵It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. ⁶Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. ⁷It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

⁸Love never fails. I heard a sermon one time where the pastor of the church said to replace the word LOVE with GOD. GOD IS LOVE! It's that simple! So thus the reason I kept this new lanyard simple with the focal point being the charm that says "Jesus". This one just popped into my head last weekend and rolled off of my fingers shortly after. Fingerprint Friday

Yesterday, the dogs and I hiked up Mewes Mountain and took some time to shoot some photos with the iPhone. My favorite is this one of Sedona and I just being silly (she moved just as I hit the button and it moved my arm). God gives us the opportunity to simply be silly. Sometimes it is in that silliness, that we find we are closest to Him. As long as the focus is on worshipping Him, silly or serious, He will be with us!

So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun.

I haven't had any sales yet but I hope to some day hit a point when sales slow down. When it does, I will be ready with this article from Everything Etsy:

When sales slow down, it’s time to spice up your shop!

For whatever reason, everyone experiences slow times with their shops. Take advantage of this time and prepare for those sales to come. You’ll be glad you did!

Here’s a few tips to get you going…in no particular order.

1. Spice up the look of your shop with a new banner that really reflects what you sell. Think of a catchy tag line to add to it. While you’re at it, make a new avatar. We’re talking “mini-makeover” here!

2. Make sure all your photos are top notch! Take a look around Etsy and notice the way bright and clear photos get your attention. Redo some of your photos while you have time, and make sure you have 5 photos of each item. Maybe you’ll be busy faster because of it!

3. Make multiples of your best selling items to save you time later on. It will also help you with fast shipping. Fast shipping helps get you more repeat business and awesome feedback.

4. Check your shop sections and make sure they’re easy to navigate. You want your buyers to be able to find what they want…and more! Don’t let them get confused and leave.

5. Let the descriptions of each item sell for you! If you have a little story about why you made it or how you got started making them, tell them about it! Include measurements, types of material you used, and any other detail you think they might want to know. Remember, they can’t pick it up and look at it so your description can make or break a sale.

6. Check your tags for each item. Are you using all of them. If it describes your item, use it. Don’t forget the colors!

7. Go over your shop policies, and make sure you’re clear on expected shipping times and returns.

8. Update your profile. Buyers like to know a little about you! You’re so much more interesting than a big retail store!

9. Update your shipping. It’s a big world out there, so shipping internationally can help. Make sure you know what to charge.

10. This is one of my favorites…packaging! Everyone loves to receive something beautifully wrapped. Make a great first impression with a note and a little creativity. It doesn’t have to cost a ton, but it needs to show you care. Don’t forget to add a photo of your packaging to your listing!

I love these tips!! Even if sales haven't slowed down, these are great tips to use in any Etsy Shop. Look for changes in mine in the next few weeks.

Learn to Master Thin Wire

Good Evening!

This afternoon, I was so excited because I received an email telling me I can learn to master thin wire (which is my biggest nemesis when it comes to making jewelry). I would LOVE to learn to wrap wire like so many of the pros out there! There were some fantastic tips in the email:

1: Keep thin wire tightly rolled so it does not kink. I keep mine in small plastic pop-top boxes, but even a zip-top plastic baggie that’s close in size to your roll will help.
2: If you get a kink in your thin wire, just use a pair of nylon-jaw pliers to straighten it. Keep in mind that the wire, especially non-precious-metal wire thinner than 24-gauge, weakens greatly at the kink point, so do your best to keep it straight.

3: Wire thinner than 24-gauge is obviously not as strong as thicker wires, so avoid using it for weight-bearing loops unless you’re doing some kind of tricked-out design like Cecelia Guastaferro’s Tiny Wrappings.
4: Because thin wire is so easy to bend, it may be tempting to work more quickly with it than you might with thick wire. Don’t. Work slowly and make purposeful bends, wraps, coils, and loops.
5: The upside to thin wire is that you can easily manipulate it with your fingers. For instance, there’s no need to grasp it with a chain-nose pliers to coil it or wrap it. In fact, it’s probably better to use your fingers or nylon-jaw pliers to handle thin wire so you don’t mar it.

That's it - then the email tells you to click on their link to order your free issue of their magazine. Okay, I'm game so I click on the link. You have to order a subscription for them to send you the free issue. UGH! I would rather PREVIEW before I buy. Weekend Feature: Elegant Butterfly

Good Morning!

One of my very good friends lost a young child to S.I.D.S a few years ago. At the funeral, the song Butterfly Kisses by Bob Carlisle was played as the baby flew up to Heaven to be with Jesus and her Grandpa. Now, I can never look at butterflies the same way again!

The entire time I was working on this piece, I could only think of my friend and how they entire family handled the death of this little gift. We are only dancing on this earth a short while but our legacy will live on forever! I am very happy with the result! I hope whoever has the pleasure of owning this necklace feels the love that went into the creation of the item.

Spring is the time for new life! The first thing I think of when I think Spring is of the butterfly coming out of her cocoon. This necklace works great in all seasons! Visit my Etsy store and my Handmade Artist Shop to view more information!

A few days ago I found a Fan Page on Facebook about a different way of doing a First Friday Art Walk; Online. Intrigued, I began to do a little research and when I saw what they were doing, I jumped right in and signed up! Good Evening!

Nothing makes me happier than to hear that someone likes my work. Even if they don't purchase the piece, it still makes me feel all warm and fuzzy to know that someone even noticed. We have a new neighbor in the "hood" and we decided to invite him over for dinner this evening. I have all of my necklaces on stands in our sun room right now and he commented on the gold tiger's eye necklace as he was walking out. I'm just so thrilled I had to share!!

Weekend Feature: Golden Tiger Necklace

This week's feature is very similar to the First Spring Lilacs necklace I featured last week. However, this one turned out a little more golden and reminds me more of the Autumn season rather than the Spring. However, I am not disappointed in the result.

I love Tiger's Eye! It takes me back in my mind to my high school days; our mascot was a tiger. While this piece does not have the school colors of orange and black, it certainly captures the essence of the spirit. I think this would look great with a turtle neck in the winter months!

One of the tasks that I set myself up to do on a weekly basis is to feature a Facebook shop that is mentioned in the Handmade Artist's Forum. This week, the feature is for Ann Made Stuff. The artist learned from her mother at a very young age how to sew. You can see more about the artist by visiting her blog. You can view her web page to see what else she creates. You can follow her Tweets. And you can see her one, two, or three Online shops. There is plenty to keep you looking for the rest of the afternoon and off into the evening. In her sewing, she created the Stuffie Monster. I think these are just adorable!! I'm afraid though, that one of the furkids would grab onto this cute little creature and that would be the end of it. How to Start a Business 101

Good Afternoon!

I thought since I had a little extra time this afternoon, that I would look into making Mewes Mountain Arts a little more official. I headed over to the IRS web site and did a search for starting a business. All I have to say is WOW! My head is spinning...There appears to be a few steps to making it happen. This not all inclusive checklist is provided on the IRS site with links to more information:

Apply for an employer Identification Number (EIN) if applicable
Select a business structure
Choose a tax year
Choose your accounting method
If you have employees, have them fill out all of the appropriate forms.
Pay your business taxes

What?!? So while looking at each of these items in a little more detail, I found a site that asks very specific questions about starting up your own business. When you click submit, it provides several resources for preparing to start your new venture. While I have a Master's Degree and I have attended countless business-related courses and seminars, I think there is definitely room to grow on my part.

As I go through the process, I hope to share the steps with you so you can become familiar with the process BEFORE jumping in all the way. Just look for posts titled "How to Start a Business 101". I am at step one which is researching what step two is. As soon as I know - I will be sure to share; wish me luck!

Weekend Feature: First Spring Lilacs

Good Afternoon!

I have decided that I am done with Winter this weekend and want to enjoy the warm weather of Spring. This week, my featured pieces is a lilac necklace that was simple to make but really turned out quite elegant. What I absolutely love is the purple cats eye faceted beads and how the Swarovski lilac bicone beads offset. I also had a great time photographing this one. I took the furkids out for a walk and looked for just the right rock to be able to showcase the glitter of this necklace. I do not think that the pictures do the necklace (or the rock for that matter) justice. However, I think this would look great with a nice Spring-like dress. I have it posted in the Etsy store if you would like to see more photos. Really, it is just in time for Easter!!

The best intentions definitely have gone awry this week as I had to travel to Phoenix and have had very limited access to the forums, Facebook, and quite frankly all of the social networking sites. Weekend Feature: Breast Cancer Awareness Lanyard

Good Evening!

My husband has started a new job which involves him to a) work on Saturday and b) take the only Mewes camera with him on the day I like to feature one of my new pieces. So, rather than force the Saturday feature, I'm renaming it to the Weekend Feature to allow for some flexibility on posting!

This week, I have attempted something way out of the norm for me; an ID badge lanyard. Because of my passion for finding a cure for Breast Cancer, I thought that my first one should showcase Breast Cancer awareness beads. I'm happy with the way this one turned out but I can already see some changes that I would like to make; specifically to the connection in the middle. I love the HOPE script slider but the cost is just a bit more than I feel comfortable spending. Plus, the cost of the lanyard would go way up!

I like the fact that instead of a boring lanyard, a person could really dress up their ID badge for work with one of these. Feel free to check it out in the store and then tell your friends. I can custom one for you!

I found this blog this morning and I couldn't resist to participate!!

You know, I think it is really hard to simply pick one when it comes to seeing the fingerprints of God in my life! I can see it in my wonderful husband that he has sent to me. I can see it in the furkids when they follow so closely behind and help to protect me. I can see it when a piece of jewelry comes together and blesses the life of another. His fingerprints are EVERYWHERE!!

Good Morning!

This week's featured artist is a husband and wife team I would consider a Jack and Jill of all trades - "A few of the things my hubby has done are woodwork, ceramics, sketching, sewing, painting, and graphic arts. Some of the things I have tried include paper making, macrame, bead work, shrink plastic, web design, wood burning, book binding, sewing, sketching, and writing." In fact, their blog tells us that one of the items crafted early in life was a drum set out of an old music stand, cardboard paper, and Tupperware. AMAZING! Of course, it could have something to do with the fact that they are fellow Stephen King fans.

I personally am a sucker for handmade ceramic pots and the two of them have some fantastic pots in their Etsy store. Her is one of my favorites:

Saturday Morning Features: Liam's Celtic Guardian Bracelet

What a GLORIOUS day God has provided us with! Let us rejoice and be glad!!

Last week I featured an iterative of this Celtic piece in the Handmade Artists Forum. I received some feedback (thanks Larissa!) that I should look at using other charms. So this week's feature is the result. I again think this turned out nice. When I sat down to put it together, I discovered that I had forgot to order the same charms I had used in the first but I don't think you really can notice. In fact, I learned from the first one and was able to make this one a little more flexible and wearable! Again, it works great for the Irish holiday coming up this month!

Tomorrow is First Friday!!

When I lived in Kansas City, the first Friday of every month was quite the event for artists in the Crossroads area downtown. Artists open their studios and celebrate the accomplishments and relationships with others. I remember it from 2 or 3 years ago and so much has changed that I am sure it is even better now. I really did believe this was something uniquely Kansas City. Well, it turns out that several cities have First Fridays; including Denver, CO. You can start in the Santa Fe Drive area at 5:30 for a walking tour of one of Denver's oldest neighborhoods. Then, begin your tour of galleries of over 30 participating artist. Make it a night and support artists in your local city!!

Right Down the Street

Good Evening!

I have been working to network with other artists to really understand the industry and well as get ideas and feedback from others. While much of what I do is with artists in the Handmade Artists Forum, I have discovered some great artists in my very own neighborhood. In fact, one is a short 5 miles from my house (which is amazing considering that I live 30 miles from the nearest civilization). Her and I have been trying to connect so we can swap stories, share ideas, and simply spend some time beading. However, we have been running into roadblocks the past few weeks. Hopefully we can get together soon!

I do want to point you in her direction to see what she has done. When I first found her on Etsy, she had about 10 items listed. She is now up to 171 and has some beautiful work!! To date, my favorite piece is Cross My Heart. Made with lead free pewter crosses and hearts, Austrian crystal, glass pearls, black obsidian, and black suede, it really shows the care that she takes in designing and putting together gorgeous pieces!! She has also been marketing in the area and getting jewelry displayed in several of the local shops. I had seen some of her items in the local coffee shop but had no idea when I contacted her on Etsy that this was the same person. I'm excited to get the opportunity to spend some time with her and pick her brain for ideas! Enjoy!!

Not long ago, one of my featured artists was CJ Grand; the best steampunk jeweler I have 'met' to date. When I think os the new Johnny Depp movie coming out, the first thing that popped into my head was CJ Grand. Check out her stuff by visiting my blog post.

Tonight, I have discovered a jewelry artist who is in the know and thinking all about the current times. Fellow Handmade Artist Forum member, Rachel Elliot Glassworks created these adorable Drink Me necklaces just in time for the movie release. Within a very short time, she was posting in the forum letting us know she sold to someone who had worked on the film and was attending the premiere in the UK. That is so awesome!! This week's feature is one that I really think turned out great! It was my first attempt at using memory wire in a project and I must say that I am very happy with the way that it turned out. The original design I saw for it actually had a beer mug charm on it which really made it more suitable for St. Patrick's Day. However, the cost of the bracelet would have had to jump up about $30 to pay for the charm. Instead, I opted for the cross to give it more of the Celtic charm rather than Irish party look. Either way, it works great for the Irish holiday coming up next month! Let me know what you think - would love to hear!

I'll start with my favorite place to buy beads Online: ArtBeads.com! I have yet to run into an item that they didn't have that I was looking for. I also love the fact that when you find a product, they will suggest other items you may be interested in as well as other colors. You can also search for different ideas and projects and then order the supplies right then and there. I love it! If they don't have an item you want in stock, they will let you know when it comes in. They are quick to ship (usually within 2 or 3 days which is good even way out here in the boondocks). I highly recommend them for all of your beading needs.

Local Artist Feature: Perry Potter

Good Evening!

A few weeks back while searching on Etsy for local artists, I found this absolutely adorable bird feeder:

I couldn't resist! I contacted the artist immediately and was treated to a visit to the artist's studio just down the road in Colorado Springs. I was thrilled! I was welcomed into the studio not only by the artist, but by the entire family; including the dogs. I was given the full tour and had the rare opportunity to see pieces that are not yet listed for sale. I also was able to view pieces she had just started. It was very inspirational and I can hardly wait to pick up a wheel and a kiln to do some throwing myself.

While there, I found the most adorable bird house to go with the feeder. So I snatched it up!

I can hardly wait for the weather to improve outside so I can showcase them in my rock garden. Until then, they will just have to do in my sun room windows. I have no doubt that the hummingbirds are going to LOVE these!

Tonight, CJ Grand of The Grand Design introduces us to Steampunk. Think of H.G Wells and Jules Verne and you have the idea of Steampunk; a science fiction genre featuring elements of fantasy from a time when steam power was widely used.

Coming to us from Ontario, Canada, CJ provides a view into the Steampunk world through her Etsy shop and her fantastic designs! The artist tells us "All of my jewelry is made by me from natural stones, vintage beads, crystals, reclaimed and repurposed items any other materials that inspire me." My favorite piece of jewelry by CJ is this Steampunk Glass Fuse Earring set. "These little glass fuse earrings will add the finishing touch to any steampunk costume or be a great conversation starter for everyday wear. They are made of glass fuses wrapped in copper wire and are light and comfortable to wear. They measure 2 3/4 inches in length" and are a great price!!

Saturday Morning Features: Blue Rose

Good Morning!

So I am a day late on the Saturday Morning Feature but I feel it is better to be late than to never post it!

This week, I would like to introduce to you a bracelet that I made several months ago but still think it is one of my favorites: Blue Rose. I personally like my bracelets to either be big and clunky or with loads of 'danglies'. This one is one of the bigger ones. I love the weight but I especially love the reflectiveness of the blue glass beads. I also like that you can really dress up an outfit with this or you can simply wear it with jeans and a t-shirt. Either way, I love it!

I can't wait to see what other ideas I come up with!

Spending Money on Advertising

Good Morning!

So for the past 30+ days, I have been working hard to get the word out there that I have started up a business. I have the store, the blog, the forum membership, and the fan page. I am working on the product and have a strategy and a plan. Now, I need to get the word out to more than those who know me. I have been using LinkedIn and The Hand Made Artist's Forum to 'meet' new people. But what else can I do? I found a few great tips on the Etsy blog that I would like to share with you:

1. Establish a budget

2. Define your best customer

3. Make a list of 10 websites that cater to your ideal customer

4. Collect and evaluate your options

5. Design entertaining ads

6. Deploy your ads

7. Measure, refine, and repeat

Sounds easy enough.

I think the most difficult thing for me right now is being willing to spend money on advertising. I want to do it and I totally understand the need to do it. It is simply having the money to do it.

It is taking that leap of faith and knowing that He will hold me up.

A few weeks ago, I posted an idea from Someday Crafts' blog that I really wanted to try. After much deliberation, I gave it a shot. I took some creative liberties with the idea and instead of using vinyl, I used stained glass paint. It didn't turn out too bad:

I learned a valuable lesson about the tile; do NOT try and wash it out. There is no way to get that water out from inside and it leaves water spots. The velum helps but you can still see (in person, not in the photos) that the water is still inside.

Making a Net

Good Morning!

The Internet is an amazing thing! You can shop online. You can sell online. You can find patterns online. Last night I sat down to weave some of my new beads when I discovered they aren't exactly the most consistent seed beads. In fact, they are probably the most inconsistent beads I have ever seen. I needed a pattern that would fit with the type of beads I have. I haven't gotten the opportunity to create anything outside of the peyote stitch and that definitely wasn't working! Plus, the pattern book I have been using is sitting on the table in Colorado so that doesn't much help me here. So I went to the Internet and found a pattern I could use to create something new out of these beads. Amazingly enough, this is working! The Netting pattern allows for the beads to be inconsistent in size and still give you a nice piece. I'm not very far into the project because I got a couple of phone calls last night that took me away from getting too far. However, I will work on it and get it posted for you to see.

Beads Galore - Phoenix, AZ

Good Afternoon!

I mentioned yesterday on my Facebook page that I would be traveling to Phoenix and making a stop at my favorite bead store: Beads Galore. Well, I did! I spent a little time wandering around with my cart, my baggies, and my Sharpie. I am afraid if given enough time, I would buy up the entire place so instead I settled on just a few select items.

Can you see anything out of these?

I CAN! And I might just have to run to Michael's (which is across the street from my hotel) and pick up some needles and thread and go to work!! It i so hard traveling sometimes! I would love to hear tips from anyone out there who has successfully mastered the art of beading and traveling.

This week in the blog ring, I would like to point you in the direction of the Reef Botanicals. The owners and creators are the great and powerful Larissa and Eric. This husband and wife duo make soap, candles, and pretty much whatever comes to their creative minds!

Note: Being one who has made an attempt to make my own soap and candles (and failing miserably) I love to see a couple who work together to keep up looking and smelling our best!

I logged into their blog last week and was hit with the fact that Larissa and Eric are beer snobs. I love beer so naturally this post intrigued me. Yep! You guessed it! Eric brews his own beer and Larissa makes soap out of it. I LOVE IT!!

Saturday Morning Features: Red Foliage

Good Morning!

Every Saturday I get online and look through all of my emails and fan pages and LinkedIn Updates and work on inspiration for new creations. I also select one item from my inventory that I want to feature on Etsy for the week. On the blog, I will call it the Saturday Morning Feature: [Name of the Item] and then provide you a link so you can see it. This week, I have selected one that I was going to save for the fall listings but I just simply can't wait any longer! Introducing Red Foliage!

I enjoyed making this one. However, I was ALMOST done when I realized that I was going to be exactly one leaf short. Well rather than fudge one string or another, I ordered another batch of the leaves. I figure I will be able to use them again somewhere, right?

I am finding that the seed beading and weaving is fairly easy to do while sitting in front of the television watching my favorite shows. I can't wait to see what other ideas I come up with!

Virtual Craft Show

Good Morning!

When I was growing up, my mother was really into crafts and craft shows. For 50 cents a person, you could wander around the auditorium looking at the wares of others; some of it was cool to a 7-year-old and some of it was simply just not what interested me. As I venture into the craft world online, I guess I should not be surprised that there is an online craft show. Just like at the shows in the auditorium, there are isles and isles of 'crafting goodness'. Everything is for sale! If you love craft shows but simply can't get out of the house to get there, then here is your alternative:

I have not purchased a 'booth' yet as I don't have enough items to really make spending the money worth it yet. However, I absolutely will have a booth coming soon!

Good Morning!

I was playing around this weekend with the 'stained glass' paint. I really messed up the 'E' in the word I was making so I had to make a second one. While I was playing around, I was using the extra 'E' to practice. When all was said and done, I ended up with an actually pretty good looking item. I added some beads and this is the final product:

I wonder what else I can 'mess up'!

Handmade Artists Blog Ring

Good Morning!

On my adventure to get the word out about my jewelry, I happened upon an artist's forum that I absolutely LOVE! If you are ever looking for artist feedback on any of your work, I highly recommend you sign up and start posting in the forum.

While reading through some of the postings last night, I came across a post discussing a "Blog Ring". Here is how it works: In the forum, you post your Blog URL for others to see. Then, on a rotating basis (It looks like weekly), you will be given an artist to 'feature' on your own personal blog (similar to what I have been doing with items I find on other blogs only this is about the artist's work in general rather than a specific piece).

I'm waiting to find out what ring I am placed in to (there are several). Check every week to see who the next featured artist is! I am hoping that in doing this, I will be able to find blogs that help me to get the word out as well as to learn some best practices in regards to blogging.

February Decorations

Good Evening!

I have never really had February decorations so I decided to add some flare to my mantel with some pink flowers. I used some floral tape to get the white flowers to connect to the pink flowers. Then I used some purple sand and violet rocks to hold the bouquet vertical. I finished it off with a bow to match the boxes (they were pre-fabricated purchased at a local craft store). I really enjoyed putting it together!

Banner Format

Good Morning!

This morning I came across a blog that explains one way of changing the banner at the top of the page using Picassa (Picasa is a free photo editing software from Google). I have always used Microsoft's PowerPoint and the available Paint program. I have downloaded the application and hopefully I will have some time this weekend to test out the tips. If you have a little time, browse through the "Crap I've Made" blog; very cute!! I love the layout so look for changes coming to Mewes Mountain Arts!

Crafty Goodness

Good Morning!

My Heritage in crafts: Both of my grandmothers were fantastic, crafty women. My Grandma Edna spent many hours showing me different types of arts and crafts and always told me to do what I like best. My Grandma Elaine, passed much of that craftiness to her daughters and granddaughters through the years. Because of that, I have cousins galore who are very handy with the crafting tools.

Today I would like to feature my cousin Kjersten and her handmade paper collages. She has a great Etsy store and a web site dedicated to her paper collages. Please check them out and let me know what you think!

I do have one request - that you pray for Kjersten, her husband Bryce, and their little son Oscar as they are moving to Malaysia for a while. I pray for safe travels and many happy adventures!
